Why did you decide to apply for the
job as the director at Chapter?
Chapter is one of Wales’s leading arts
venues. I’ve been working in Wales for
over 20 years and it is my home, so when
one of the best jobs in the arts in Wales
became available I had to apply.
How is Chapter different from other
venues you have worked for?
Cultural hub is a term that is widely
banded around. Chapter is exactly
that. It is diverse, original, fun and
challenging. Two cinema spaces, two
theatres, gallery, artists units, rehearsal
studios and 35+ creative companies can
all be found in the footprint of Chapter.
Put it all together and nearly 300 people
work out of, or for, Chapter. Add in a café
bar social space that pretty much the
whole arts community meets in and that
sets it apart from most other venues. It
really is unique and special to Cardiff
and Wales.
Chapter has been named Wales’ film
hub – what does this mean?
Chapter presents the most diverse
programme of arthouse and specialist
independent film in Wales. In other words
pretty much everything you won’t find
at a chain cinema. Our cinemas have
a capacity of 191 and 57 and we make
the whole experience as unique and
supportive as the artform as possible. In
addition we support several film festivals
during the year, such as Iris and One
World, and support local filmmakers
wherever possible through our education
work and screening opportunities.
What does Chapter mean to the
culture of Canton and Cardiff?
Chapter is an artistic and social hub. So
much of what we do reflects and supports
the communities of Canton and Cardiff. I
believe people are all fundamentally
creative and social beings. Chapter fulfils
both these human needs to a remarkable
