Digesting the best of South Wales culture in the month ahead by Heather Arnold AS we head into September I would have assumed that, as sunny afternoons are replaced with soggy days, there wouldn’t be much going. As we put the final touches to this issue of Buzz I stand corrected. As we all start to head ‘back to school’ I can’t help thinking that those who work hard must play hard, and this month there is plenty of ways to do just that. There is no shortage of playing at Wales’ largest free beach festival, Bae Fest. With everything from surfing to woodcraft, Sat 28 and Sun 29 Sept is bound to be an interesting one in Swansea. If your young and searching for something to do then look out for Somewhere To...’s Highstreet Heist, popping up in Cardiff, Newport, Carmarthen and Treherbert. By renting out vacant shops across the UK, Somewhere To... hope to take what were dull and derelict commercial spaces and provide a place for 16-25 year olds to be creative. Throughout September they are organising a variety of workshops (including comedy improv), film nights, art exhibitions and live music – right on the high street. The art scene is vibrant this month, with Cardiff Bay’s Norwegian Church showing Pauline Thomas’s bright and beautiful Wallscapes for one week only from Mon 2-Sun 9 Sept – blink and you’ll miss it. Another exhibition not to be missed is this year’s exhibition of images from the Royal Photographic Society, being displayed at Newport’s Riverfront until Sat 7 Sept. If you’re more of a science fan then you’ll probably already know that Sir David Attenborough is visiting Cardiff University this month. Sir David will be delivering a lecture about renowned naturalist Alfred Russell Wallace on Wed 18 Sept, unfortunately tickets are already sold out but hang around long enough and you might catch a glimpse of this icon. If you fancy getting your nature fix outside of a lecture theatre then it might just be time to try out the Bargoed Outdoor Cinema. Returning on Fri 6 Sept with animated nature-loving kids’ film Epic, the cinema can be found in the Emporium Car Park in Bargoed. No tickets needed for these free screenings. More outdoor entertainment is provided by travelling puppet show Mr Clevver, who’s eerie and interesting puppets will be telling heartfelt stories at Coity Castle on Sat 7 Sept and St Davids Bishop Palace, Pembrokeshire on Fri 13 Sept. Despite September being thought of as a month for settling back down to work, no longer being treated to sunny evening and summer holidays, there is still so much to do. This month is one that is certain to buzz. pic: RILEY SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY GIG TICKETS OF YOUR CHOICE Music lovers, open yer ears.
