clubs JAMIE ANDERSON Perc’s 2nd Birthday @ Da Vinci’s, Newport Sat 21 Sept Tip of the hat to Paul Blandford and the rest of the Perc crew for entering their second successful year, despite many thinking Newport was not the place for an underground night of its nature. Their summer sunrise events saw the dancefloor populated until the birds tweeted, and they move into autumn and their second birthday with Artform imprint owner and Cocoon regular, Jamie Anderson, along with local hero Owain K. “I’m playing back to back with Owain for the first time in ages,” explains Jamie. “We’ve known each other for years so we know each other’s sound well – there is always some friendly rivalry behind the decks as we will be trying to outdo each other by dropping the best record we can find. Expect lots of new music, some classics and a great party.” Some of that new music will no doubt include Jamie’s output for Artform, the label he set up in 1997 to channel Detroit and Chicago influenced house and techno. “I currently have a new release out on Artform called Electric Voodoo,” says Jamie, “which is a collaboration between myself and Louis Osbourne which features remixes by Jerome Krom, Rob Belleville, Psytox and Mariana split over two EPs. I also work with Louis under name O&A with releases on Play It Down and DJ Sneak’s Magnetic label along with the launch of our own All Night Records imprint. I’ve also been collaborating with Owain K for more releases on Dessous. I play a mix of Detroit influenced techno and jacking house with elements of jazz and Latin, acid and old-school deep house. I like to keep the energy up while still making the music diverse and as interesting as possible. This is reflected in the way I produce, I don’t like to make the same record over and over or follow trends – I just go with what feels right.” Residents providing solid support as always are Paul Blandford, Matthew Miles, Chris Cain, Billy Jordan and Owen Kilby. Tickets: £8. Continuing to push his fusion of dubstep, garage, electronica and house, the release has seen him take on a busy schedule since. “I’ve been busy doing gigs and generally supporting the album,” says Matt, “and getting ready for my forthcoming tour of North America. I haven’t had a lot of time for music since I finished the album, but I’m hoping I can find some time once the shows are out the way.” Summer shows for Fabric, Kendal Calling and Beach Break have given him the chance to showcase tracks from the album, along with some tunes by those who inspire him. “I’m so epicly out the loop at the moment,” explains Matt, “but the last batch of tunes that got me excited was from Arkist. I find it hard to describe the music I make, but would say it’s normally quite melodic and definitely on the more chilled side of things. I’m never one to figure out what I’m playing until I’m at a venue, but would imagine I’ll play a lot of my own stuff, old and new, then move onto some other things I’m rating at the time.” Tickets: £10. As a DJ, producer, label head and presenter of one of its most popular radio shows hosted on Radio One, Brighton’s Ed Keeley has been prominent since the nineties as Friction, enjoying output on labels including Hospital, Tru Playaz, Renegade Hardware and Metalheadz. It wasn’t until 2004 when he founded his own baby, the much respected Shogun Audio (along with Keir ‘K-Tee’ Tyrer), that he really stamped his name onto the genre. As well as their own individual and collaborative releases, Shogun Audio also represents some of the biggest hitters in all offshoots of drum and bass including Commix, Total Science, Icicle and Alix Perez. This summer Friction has played festivals big, small and quirky in the likes of Estonia and Croatia, and he picked up Best Radio Show and runner-up Best DJ at the Drum And Bass Awards 2013, so he should be well prepped for tonight. Props have been given on this page before to Catapult’s venue of choice for this evening, but to reiterate: if you haven’t yet filled your boots with a decent club night at The Vaults, do yourself a favour. Tickets: £14. Info: 029 2166 0633 (RH) SIMON PATTERSON Delusion @ The Garage, Swansea Sat 14 Sept After taking last month off, Delusion return with a flyer-packed all-nighter that includes an upgraded soundsystem, visuals and CO2 cannons. The line-up is most decent too, with 11 DJs over seven hours. At the top of the list is Beatport dominator (eleven consecutive number ones) Simon Patterson, who we caught up with halfway through his August North American tour. “On the production front I’m currently enjoying new collaborations with a few breaks producers including Blazer, Beatman and Ludmilla,” says Simon, “and also with Israeli trance don Astrix. There are also a few new bits incoming from me.” Describing his sound as “emotive and futuristic with tech and psy influences,” Simon has also recently made some noise as the host of a series for Radio One titled In New DJs We Trust. “Some of the artists doing it for me at the moment include Andrew Bayer, Gai Barone, Gui Boratto, Blazer and Vertical Mode,” explains Simon. “All are at the top of their genres right now. I’ll be bringing their sounds and more to Delusion. I used to play escape in Swansea loads and loved it there, so this will be nasty stuff!” Also on the line-up are Jonny Griffiths, Ben Joseph, Sam Jones, Ben Aldred, Dave Eaves, Jace Williams, Digital Horizon, Joe Byrne, Callan Christie and Wayne Hannigan. Tickets: £10. Aura closing in June didn’t exactly help, but what it’s mainly reaffirmed is that much of the local dance scene is fuelled by the blood of students. The timing of Mood’s debut night may, therefore, not be a coincidence. The night’s headline act, Answer Code Request, is also in Wales for the first time, and should go down a storm with fans of the Berlin school of pared-back, hardboiled techno. Also to be found releasing music under his real name, Patrick Gräser, ACR has nevertheless stacked up some impressive credentials since the late 00s. His last two singles have been released on Marcel Dettmann’s label – Marcel and Patrick grew up in the same town before moving to Berlin, and both are now resident DJs at the German capital’s infamous club, Berghain. All told, an ACR set will probably be one of the less techno-purist you’d hear there – he’s vocal about his love of Aphex Twin and associated 90s UK electronica, and you can expect a set from him to be deep and many-angled, as well as tough and driving. Rymos and Severn Junction are the other confirmed guests, and there’s an official afterparty from 4-11am if you want to punish yourself. Tickets: £8. Info: 029 2022 8883 (NG) BUZZ 42
