WELSH BAFTAS
SEPTEMBER will be an exciting and tense month for everyone involved in Welsh film and television as, once again, the British Academy Of Film And Television Arts Cymru is coming to town. Or if you like savouring your oxygen for more important things (like moaning about the weather), the Welsh BAFTAs are here. Founded over 20 years ago, BAFTA Cymru was set up to celebrate the artistic excellence of all those lovely talented people working in the Welsh TV and film industry. The event is Wales’ most important ceremony of its kind and has been won by, and played host to, such heavy hitters as Rob Brydon, Lord Richard Attenborough and Michael Sheen, with the British Academy Cymru Award mask trophy being a longstanding symbol of creative excellence and general Welsh badassery. Every year hundreds of films are entered into the running by distributors, producers or Academy members. Representing every field of film, television and video game each entry will have been said to have made a significant contribution to its industry whether it be for excellent writing, groundbreaking editing or brilliant costume design. An extensive two-round voting system then takes place, by all the head honcho members of BAFTA, to whittle the list of hopefuls down to a select few before deciding on the cream of the crop. This year the event will be hosted by This Morning’s Matt Jones and BBC news correspondent Sian Lloyd. Talking to us at Buzz, Sion explains that BAFTA is “a hugely respected organisation that is very well thought of in the industry... it’s the pinnacle really. It’s what everybody aims for, winning a BAFTA.” The highlights for 2013’s nominees include Michael Sheen setting his sights on best actor in the film The Gospel Of Us, based on the three day passion play that toured Wales in 2011, and BBC dramas such as Sherlock and The Indian Doctor. But by far the biggest frontrunner is Sky One’s television drama Stella. The show is nominated for no less than ten awards that include everything from costume design to lighting. Stella’s writer and leading-lady Ruth Jones, of Gavin And Stacy fame, is up for two awards as best actress and best writer. So to celebrate all things Welsh in the media right now, make sure to huddle down in front of the award ceremony with some popcorn to see who will emerge victorious. CLASSICAL COWBRIDGE
THE classically minded will descend on the picturesque town of Cowbridge during September for its annual music festival. Now in its fourth year, the Cowbridge Music Festival plays host to a variety of performers including pianists, violinists and opera singers. Featuring an eclectic mix of performances, six concerts will form the main part of the festival. Opening the proceedings on Fri 13 Sept are The Sitkovetsky Trio – one of Europe’s leading piano trios who are described by The Independent as “reminiscent of the Beaux Arts Trio in their heyday”. A group of virtuoso musicians from central and eastern Europe, Tri i Dve: From East West, return with a unique combination of classical and traditional folk styles. Following on from last year’s success they will be joined by special guest Welsh tenor Wynne Evans for a unique show. Musicians from Germany, Iceland, Hungary, Bulgaria, England and Wales will be forming a group of European string players for The Festival Camerata. Having evolved since it started in 2010 violinist Felix Froschhammer will lead a programme of popular string ensemble pieces. The musical talent of the future will be on show as cellist Steffan Morris, one of Wales’ most promising young musicians, is joined by Swiss pianist Lucas Buclin for this year’s Young Artists’ Recital. An invigorating mix of popular classics and accessible contemporary music played on two marimbas, vibraphone and a huge array of percussions will be on the menu from O Duo. Having played at music festivals around the world and made their BBC Proms debut, this is set to be a distinctive display. The festival finale will feature Welsh baritone Gary Griffiths, who is joined by Hannah Stone, Harpist to HRH the Prince of Wales. Performing works by Britten, Salzedo and Mozart they will no doubt spell-bind audiences with their unique combination. A refined event in the heart of the Vale Of Glamorgan, the festival offers the opportunity to enjoy exceptional and distinctive musical performances from all over Europe this autumn. Look out for a day of master classes and the community outreach programme that form part of the festival. Cowbridge Music Festival, Fri 13-Fri 27 Sept. Tickets: £10-£12.
