he Tudor period in English history is bloody and exciting; full of murder, revenge, intrigue and plots. It makes our own modern politics look like a couple of kids scrapping in the playground. The period exerts a powerful fascination, even four hundred years later. Witness the seemingly never-ending stream of portrayals of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I in films and television series, the most recent being the American television show, The Tudors.
