events WHAT is ‘world music’? That’s not a trick question but it is a tricky one to answer. The term was popularised in the late 20th century as a catch-all description for non-western traditional music, although these days it includes much more than that, as anyone who attended any of last year’s WOMEX events in Cardiff will attest. From Korean heavy metal/folk fusion and traditional Quebecois songs to psychedelic Peruvian cumbia and Galician bagpipe players, ‘world music’ encompasses a bewildering array of music. Out here on the edge of Europe, we often overlook the fact that, from the point of view of other nations, the traditional music of the British Isles can also be classed as ‘world music’. Recently artists including 9Bach and the inspired collaboration between Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita have been praised for putting Welsh music onto the ‘world music’ stage, and over in Ireland bands such as Lúnasa have long been credited with doing the same. Internationally acknowledged as being the finest traditional Irish instrumental band of recent times, Lúnasa are renowned for their inventive arrangements and bass driven grooves which have raised the profile of Irish acoustic music to new levels. Having released a series of eight highly acclaimed studio albums which have been hailed as among the best and most important world music albums from anywhere, their passion, virtuosity and innovation has also marked them out as one of the world’s finest Celtic music bands. As their reputation continues to grow, so their music continues to evolve as their most recent album proves. Recorded with Ireland’s acclaimed RTÉ Concert Orchestra, it’s a glittering and mind bogglingly good collection of tunes sparked from a one-time collaboration with the treasured national orchestra. Good as their albums are, it’s in a live setting that Lúnasa come into their own, as you can discover on Tue 14 Oct when they’ll be raising the temperature at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall as part of the autumn programme of the Roots Unearthed series.
