A WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN
****
Atomos (Erased Tapes)
AWVFTS’s second album fits neatly into the
‘washy ambient neo-classical gorgeousness’
genre. You know the format: strings smothered
in reverb, quietly epic piano... it screams
‘soundtrack’, and indeed was written to
accompany a contemporary dance piece. I can
personally attest that it lends an air of profound,
wistful melancholy to unsuccessfully attempting
to repair a child’s tricycle. Not a particular
standout of the ‘washy ambient’ canon, but if
you crave another disc of such stuff on your
shelf you won’t be disappointed. APR

GLASS ANIMALS ****
Hazey (Wolf Tone)
The fourth single from
Glass Animals’ fantastic
ZABA LP is a slow
burner that builds from
a simple beat. After layer
upon layer of hypnotic
vocals and fuzzy synths
have been thrown in the mix, you end up in a
whirlpool of aural awesomeness. It’s a head
spinner, in the best possible way. IR
SAYTEK ****
5 Years On EP (Ubermax)
Saytek has produced three cuts of techno groove
to keep your head nodding and feet moving. The
tracks are well considered, and expertly create
layers of deft instrumentation that build and
drop exactly as they should. Not succumbing to
simplicity, whilst remembering the need to keep
people dancing. Good stuff. GM
