Dirty Protest are fast becoming the theatre company in Cardiff for new writers. With a wealth of scratch nights
behind them and ‘Plays In A Bag’ events hosted at the Almeida and The Royal Court, mixing brand new writers
alongside veteran professionals they produce high energy theatre. The uninhibited atmosphere of these nights
means that writers have a chance to learn, and audiences get a mix of raw and intriguing work.
This November Dirty Protest will be in Chapter to produce Parallel Lines written by Katherine Chandler. Directed
by Catherine Paskell, Parallel Lines explores the impact of an accusation on the aligning lives of 15-year-old
Steph and her teacher Simon. With our headlines full of harrowing stories both of ignored victims and false
accusations, this play is set to slam bang into the middle of that dialogue about how our communities must
function in the face of uncertainty and the desire to protect children. It promises to provide an uncomfortable
study into the realities of communities who have to work together in a crisis.
The play’s writer, Katherine Chandler, has written for Dirty Protest previously as well as writing the charming
adventure story We Need Bees for Neath based theatre company Theatr Na Nog.
Parallel Lines won the Wales Drama Award last year after being read by a panel of judges, including Russell T
Davies of Dr Who fame and Emmy-award winning Abi Morgan. Speaking about the play Davies explained that
“what I loved about Katherine’s piece is the fact it’s a very strong play. She has so much to say about the world.”
Dirty Protest places a commendable focus on the importance of supporting new writers. Due to this commitment
the work they produce, be it a scratch night or a production, is always compelling and original.
Parallel Lines promises to be a compelling production, which combines the talent of Chandler with the flair and
