art CHRISTOPHER LANGLEY: IMPRESSION OF CUBIST WALES The Gate Arts Centre, Cardiff Wed 27 Nov-Fri 20 Dec The Gate Gallery is presenting a series of cubist and impressionist works based on the theme of Welsh landscapes. Cubism’s early 20th century style discards the idea of artwork from a single perspective, so look forward to a fantastic array of inspirational ideas, incorporating simple geometric shapes and interlocking planes as a method of promoting and glorifying our much-loved Welsh landscapes, with an even balance on the historical and more modern. The exhibition has been created by the award winning Christopher Langley. Born in Pontypridd in the early 1960s, Langley’s rewarding career in the media industry ,spanning over 30 years, led him to become a semi-professional artist in 2012. This exhibition is a showcase of Langley’s cerebral, emotional creations that specialise in acrylic and digital mediums. His unique, abstract work reconstructs the notable landmarks of Wales and Cardiff into vivid, lively and almost psychedelic visions. The use of a bright, bold colour palette elicits an alternative, passionate personality to Langley’s work. This thought provoking style makes it an attractive and vibrant visit to the Gate Gallery. The digital pieces on display have a more sophisticated feel with the use of curious, unanticipated tones of shadow and excessive contrast. Admission: free. The exhibition explores a variety of Peppé’s work, and stretches from his early days as an ad man in London during the 60s (though don’t go expecting any Mad Men-style pieces) through to the enormous collection of children’s books written and illustrated by Peppé himself. Alongside these illustrations are intricately crafted models, wooden toys and automata, all of which exude the same charisma as his books. The exhibit will have a strong sense of nostalgia, as well as charm, for those who are fans of Huxley Pig and Angelmouse. Both characters were Peppé’s creations and found a home on families’ television screens in the late 80s and early 90s. As well as those favourites the exhibition will give you the opportunity to see Peppé’s less well-known, but just as charming, children’s book characters. Curated by Barley Roscoe, the exhibition aims to give a unique insight into one of Britain’s most captivating artists. In a fast-moving world where children’s media is dominated by CGI rehashes of old cartoons, most of which no longer contain the love and charm that once made them so popular, The Wonderful World Of Rodney Peppé is a fantastic opportunity to indulge in art that is a little bit older, a little less controversial and a lot more heartwarming. The exhibition runs until January, plus a book featuring Peppé’s charming children’s books, his hand crafted models, toys and automata is to be published alongside the exhibition. If you can recall fond childhood memories with the unique characters created by the artist, this exhibition is not to be missed. Admission: free. Through this, however, there is a consistent strength in the deep, personal and political ideas, whihc are treated with modesty and humour. His firm views on morality are strongly portrayed through his work in Hollywood Dooom. The glamorous Hollywood is being engulfed by fire, flooding to great heights and about to be struck by a meteor shower. His original drawings evolved from visual experiences that the artist himself has witnessed of the destruction and ecological consequences of contemporary life. It’s clear to see that Donwood is a strong believer in the apocalypse and that it is our own foolish and selfish doings which have led to this. Donwood first gained recognition for his work in 1994 when he began designing album art work for Radiohead. Since then his work has been used for 15 singles, nine EPs and various other studio albums. His work, which consists of doomsday scenarios, are hand-carved into linoleum and then burnished onto Japanese Kozo paper.
