CARIBBEAN MEETS CONTINENTAL
CHEAP EATS IMPRESS OBSERVERS
Coffee Continental is best known for serving a variety of coffees, teas and freshly
made European coffee house-style cakes, but they’re now dipping their
toe in Jamaican culture.
Being no strangers to a world full of food, Coffee Continental already have a
delicious range of world-themed paninis. All these paninis, which you can get at
both the Blackwood and new Cardiff cafe, are inspired by a different country’s
culture (the German ‘bierfest’ panini with frankfurter, onions and mustard is
particularly delectable).
It’s Coffee Continental’s new live music nights, however, that make it stand out.
The recently opened Cardiff site will be hosting a reggae-themed night for the first
time this month. With music from well-known Cardiff busker Buster Redlox, and
Caribbean themed drinks (coffee cocktails, anyone?) the night promises to be a
good one.
Results are in for The Guardian’s annual Observer Food Monthly awards, and
it’s good news for foodies who are on a budget. A look at the runners-up in the
Best Cheap Eats category will tell you which Welsh eateries will serve you well
but save you money. The Best Cheap Eats award is not just decided by a stuffy
food critic dining for free, but by OFM readers themselves; all meals must be a
reasonable £15 or under and are separated into different regions of the UK.
The tasty ones to make it into the runners-up category were Cardiff’s Milgi
Lounge, with its quirky decor and inspiring vegetarian kitchen, plus former
delicatessen and now full-blown artisan restaurant Ultrcomida in Aberystwyth.
Also in the running was the delicious pan-Asian street food eatery Katiwok, and
film hub Chapter Arts Centre (in Canton, Cardiff) which serves fresh breakfasts,
delicious ciabatta, tasty pasta and juicy burgers. DC
