Whether some has achieved pioneer status tends to be highly debatable,
certainly in the field of guitar playing – logic suggests there’s a practical
limit to what sounds can be created with the instrument. Debashish
Bhattacharya, an Indian musician in his early 50s, has a stronger claim
than most thanks to the extraordinary sounds he teases from trickedout slide guitars. Having started to play as a toddler, he began to gain
nationwide renown in the 1980s with a fusion of Hawaiian folk and Indian
classical styles. His unique motifs were further cemented when he designed
his own guitars, hollow-neck slides with 24 and 14 strings. These will be in
full effect when he visits Pontardawe as part of a UK tour.
