We all know and love the British enthusiasm for bank holidays, and the gay abandon
with which it is acknowledged there is no work the next day. Even those of you who are
serious about being “WELSH NOT BRITISH” will have to drop your guard, admit there
is no unique Welshness to a BH jolly and attend one of these exciting looking Cardiffbased all-day music events on the first Sunday this month. Possibly with a Union Jack
handkerchief knotted around your head.
First up, we have the Holy Boredom festival, in Clwb Ifor Bach. Assembled by
Balderdash Promotions, there will be future, smaller events under this name (a gig with
US indie veterans Damon & Naomi later in May, for example), but this one has two days
of excellent music from the margins. With a brace of globetrotting turns in the form of
American psych band Pontiak and postpunk Argentinians Las Kellies [pictured top],
other highlights include Zun Zun Egui, Kogumaza and Y Pencadlys on Sun 4; Fairhorns,
Fist Of The First Man and Macho City on Mon 5.
