What: The Royal Welsh College gets all
jazzed up as it hosts its Jazz festival for
the second time. The festival combines
performances form world renowned
artists the college’s own talented
musicians. Getting their jazz hands ready
this year is the Soweto Kinch Trio with
their unique blend of hip-hop and jazz,
The Oriented House Ensemble headed
by the award-winning composer Gilad
Atzmon and the distinguished Liane
Carroll, who was awarded the title of
Best British Vocalist by the British Jazz
Awards. If you enjoyed Will Ferrell’s jazz
flute playing in Anchorman then you can
also get a dose of the real thing as Gareth
Lockrane’s Grooveyard Unplugged hit the
stage
If you want get some of all that jazz, but
don’t have a penny to spare, then there
will also be plenty of free performances
by the Royal Welsh College students in
the building’s beautiful foyer.

What: The lawn (and sky) of the magnificent Margam
Castle is the home of festival kite flying. As well as
offering the chance to show off your kites and flying
skills, workshops will be on offer for beginners and
you will also have access to the Margam Model Boat
Club Show on New Pond within the Country Park’s
grounds.

MERMAID QUAY MUSIC

What: Brand new to Cardiff’s quayside this year is
the Mermaid Quay Music Festival. Out on the streets
of Mermaid Quay will be the terrifying and titillating
Titan The Robot (the metal master of street theatre),
the heart-warming Tenovus Choir and a hands-on
African drumming workshop. There will be plenty
going on in during this 10-day music festival, which
will all round off with a big musical extravaganza on
the festival’s final day.
