ARTY CHOKE!

Digesting the best of South Wales culture in the month ahead

MAY Day, May Day! May is full of days that will leave you in a daze. Opening at the Milkwood Gallery in Cardiff on Wed 1 is Matter Lumina, in which twelve artists and makers explore the relationship between the physical object and photography, film and light. The capital also brings us Diffusion: Cardiff International Festival of Photography, which offers up a month of exhibitions, discussions, screenings, performances and other celebratory events. Wowballs! Other cool-sounding festivals include The Vale Of Glamorgan Festival( Thurs 9-Sat 18) with its feast of classical music in venues across the Vale as well as in the Diff; the Gwyl Pili Pala Festival in Swansea on the weekend of Sat 17, which brings together Welsh musicians and writers; Merthyr Tydfil Global Village, bringing the whole world into the valleys on the Sun 19, and of course the magnificent Machynlleth Comedy Festival from Fri 3, as well as Hay from Thurs 23. I said Hay!!! Yay * massive smiley face *. Hay Fest is undoubtedly a major Welsh arty highlight, and if you aren’ t going you’ re a billy bob. I am very much looking forward to Soup’ d Up in Cardiff on Weds May 29. This is basically a community meal in which all the money from punters then goes into funding a local creative project. Organised by yours truly, anyone interested is welcome to tweet me a message( my address is above). Another unusual event occurs on the Sat 25 when Scott Ian of Anthrax comes to Roath’ s The Gate to give an entertaining talk, Speaking Words, on his 30 + years of musical mayhem around the world. Near my house, I will be at this as well # letsgotogether! I’ m also looking forward to NoFit State’ s BIANCO at the WMC from Wed 1. See you there? I am particularly excited to see Crystal Jean at Chapter on Thurs 2 at the regular First Thursday poetry event. A Mulfran Press poet, this young writer is a name to watch out for. The Back Of The Pub Poetry Club is the city’ s coolest spoken word event, taking place at the Andrew Buchan pub in Roath on Sun 19. Free to attend, resident poet Johnny Giles is well worth the see, and all the hottest perf poets will be there as well. May I count myself in there? Well, I’ m the compere, so yes I will. Enjoy, Chokers! And see you next month.
