AS Britain marks the end of the cold weather and the arrival of summer with May Day celebrations throughout the country, the folk music scene moves up a gear as artists release new albums and head out for tours and festivals. With seemingly every major artist on tour, it’ s also a busy( and expensive) time for the dedicated folk fan, especially with artists of the calibre of Bella Hardy and Spiers & Boden visiting the principality. Singer and fiddle player Bella Hardy burst onto the folk scene with her 2007 debut album, Night Visiting – since when she’ s developed into one of Britain’ s finest interpreters of traditional song, and also one of its finest songwriters. Growing up surrounded by music at her home in Edale in the Peak District, Bella was inspired to become a folk musician after visits to folk festivals and through her involvement with the Folkworks summer schools in Durham which she attended as a teenager. In 2007 she acquired a Masters degree in Music from Newcastle University; emerging from her studies with the traditional and original songs that formed her debut album. Since then she’ s released several well received albums, performed unaccompanied at a sold-out Royal Albert Hall during The Proms, co-written material with former Beautiful South guitarist David Rotheray, and written songs of modern social history for her second album, In The Shadow Of Mountains. Her most recent project is the album Battleplan for which she’ s put together a new band, The Midnight Watch, who’ ll be joining her onstage for her gig at St David’ s Hall on Tue 14 May. Best known as founder members and front men of unstoppable folk juggernaut Bellowhead, squeezebox player John Spiers and fiddler Jon Boden also have a formidable reputation as one of the most dynamic acoustic duos on the British folk scene. Using just a couple of instruments to present traditional stories and dance music, they’ ve performed everywhere from small folk clubs to major festivals. They recently announced that they be taking an extended sabbatical to concentrate on other projects, but before they do they’ re embarking on a major British tour which will see them drawing on their large repertoire of traditional material, but this time they’ re also asking their fans to get involved. For this tour they’ re inviting fans to suggest folk gems with local significance to each of the shows, that they can learn and perform at the gig, whether it be a traditional song collected nearby or a dance tune associated with the area. As part of the tour they’ ll be at Cardiff St David’ s Hall on Mon 20 May; if you have any suggestions for material they might want to perform, you can contact them through their website by following this link: www. backyardsongs. com
