HUMBLE’S
SUSTAINABLE
BEEKEEPING
COURSE
Humble By Nature Farm, Monmouth, Sat 28 June
Admission: £95.
Info: 01600 714595 / www.humblebynature.com
Humble by Nature, a farm-based project initiated in 2010 by writer/presenter
Kate Humble alongside her husband, has received renowned publicity and
success in recent months, from cookery courses to a thriving farm shop.
Now, the ‘humble-bee’ is taking centre stage for a new beekeeping course
coinciding with National Insect Week (Mon 23-Sun 29 June). Did you know
that there are 16,000 species of bee? Or that a bee possesses the ability to
recognise human faces? (You might want to remember this fact should you
ever get on the wrong side of one.) Bees are fascinating creatures and more
to the point, their honey has proven to be invaluable. It’s been popularly
used as a healing agent, a medicine to treat the common cold and above all,
is delicious on a slice of toast. With honey bees facing a worrying decline in
recent years, the course offered at Humble Farm (run by local charity Bees For
Development) offers bee fanatics the chance to learn how bee colonies work,
the means of harvesting honey and the knack of handling bees safely and
above all, sustainably, whilst hopefully staying sting-free. As well as learning
the all-important basics in the farm’s classroom, participants will be given the
chance to don beekeepers’ suits and explore different types of hives.
A delicious lunch put on by the farm enables those with the bee bug to meet
and discuss their shared interest. With fantastic reviews from last year’s
events, it’s a course guaranteed to leave everyone buzzing...
