ANUSHKA
Fat City @ Gwdihw, Cardiff
Sat 14 June
As a lover of all things Brightonian I have a vested interest in this soulful outfit, comprising of Max
Wheeler and vocalist Victoria Port. That they are signed to Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings
imprint only furthers their kudos, and they will make a most welcome addition to the latest Fat City
line-up.
“Brighton is a beautiful vibrant place,” explain the duo, “and I think it has definitely been an influence.
It’s a big melting pot of music and we are fortunate enough to be friends with a lot of amazing
musicians. Being in Brighton has given us the space to develop our sound for sure.”
That sound developed into this year’s Never Can Decide, the first single from their incoming debut
album, which has been going down a storm among their fanbase and enjoying mainstream play via DJs
including Radio 1’s Monki.
“I think we were both a little overwhelmed at how well it was received,” say the duo. “You never know
what to expect when releasing music and we are so glad that the first single from the album seemed to
strike such a chord with so many people. We have also just released our vinyl-only EP Distorted Air
and have the album which is called Broken Circuit out in the summer. We really can’t wait to get it out
in the world, it’s been a labour of love and we are both really proud of it.”
Their jazz leanings and carefree approach to what they do mean they compliment any size venue
or festival with restrained grandiose, and they have recently gone down well at Brixton Jamm,
Soundcrash and The Great Escape Festival in their home city.
“We don’t like to take ourselves too seriously,” they tell us. “Our shows are always really fun. You can
expect a lot of big basslines, pretty songs, a lot of dancing and total summer vibes. We’ve been to
Cardiff before and absolutely loved it. The Welsh definitely know how to have fun and we can’t wait to
have a big party with y’all!” Tickets: £4. Info: 029 2039 7933 RYAN HEEGER
