A virtuoso is described by the Oxford Dictionary as“ a person highly skilled in music or another artistic pursuit” and, based on that description the world of British folk and roots music arguably has more than its fair share. Whether solo or as parts of larger ensembles, virtuosi are responsible for some memorable performances, no more so than when two or more of them come together. In recent years one of the most exciting examples of that has been the pairing of BBC Folk Award winners Tim Edey and Brendan Power. Tim, from Kent, is a virtuoso on both guitar and button accordion and his skill has seen him touring or recording with the likes of Christy Moore, The Chieftains, Lunasa, Altan and Capercaillie, to name a few. New Zealander Brendan is widely regarded as one of the finest harmonica players in the world and has lent his considerable talents to a wide range of artists including Kate Bush, Sting, Van Morrison and Paul Brady. Individually brilliant, together they’ re an unstoppable force of nature, thanks in no small part to their skills as improvisers. Tim’ s incredible musical ear and total technical command allows him to play the most demanding instrumentals and improvise freely in any style you throw at him; Brendan is a fluent improviser in jazz, blues and pop styles, and is also an expert player of Irish traditional music, with an All-Ireland title to his name. When the two of them share a stage, their freewheeling approach to live performance sets them apart from most roots music and their love of improvisation means that every time they perform a piece it sounds different and fresh. That sheer, mad spontaneity has unfailingly captured audiences wherever they perform and it’ s something you can experience first-hand on Tue 4 June when they’ ll be at Cardiff’ s St. David’ s Hall as part of the Roots Unearthed series.
