Back in the 80s, when I was a young( er) rock chick, it was uncool to listen to Bon Jovi. Hair metal wasn’ t real metal – it was too soft, too commercial. We said it wouldn’ t last and that Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, David Bryan, Alec Such and Tico Torres would be departing to the dungeons of rock history by the time their roots began to show. But here we are in 2013 and, apart from a sabbatical or two, the boys are still on the circuit. And, other than the replacement of Such by Hugh McDonald, the line-up has remained the same for the past 26 years. The band have 12 studio albums under their belts – the latest, What About Now was released in March. Stick-in-your-head hits You Give Love a Bad Name and Livin’ On A Prayer sent Slippery When Wet, their third album, multi-platinum. Always, a track from the 1994 best-of compilation Cross Road, sold over three million copies, becoming their best selling single and a popular choice at weddings and funerals – you can’ t say the Jovi are not accessible to all. After plateauing in the late 80s, being accused of writing‘ hackneyed’ lyrics, and reaching burnout point, Bon Jovi have elbowed their way through grunge and garage and survived intact. This month, they hit the road running with the Because We Can tour. Bon Jovi may be older, the hair may be shorter but the music still rocks. LYNDA NASH pg 60 pg 61 pg 52 pg 60 pg 65
