ARTY CHOKE!
Digesting the best of South Wales culture in the month ahead
by @ mabjones
JULY, July, will you be hot this year? In terms of arty goings on you’ ll be nothing but smokin’, of course. Amongst all the other festivaly happenings that are occurin’, Blysh at the Wales Millennium Centre looks to be a lovely one with music, spoken word, and a sexy cabaret feel all month. Then there’ s the Cardiff Comedy Festival from Mon 1 all the way until Sun 28, which is nearly a whole month of laughter-led larks and sounds a hoot to me! In the world of dance, Ballet Cymru present another exciting summer of dance at Newport’ s Riverfront from Mon 22, while in Porthcawl’ s Grand Pavilion, Summer Dance Days provide three days of dance workshops for children and young people – great if you have kids, and great for people like me who don’ t but are happy to see their friends while their kids ain’ t about, too. In far and distant( for me, not for you necessarily) Carmarthenshire, the Association Of Spinners, Weavers And Dyers will be displaying an assortment of Welsh textiles in the National Wool Museum. Not far away, the National Botanic Garden Of Wales will be in full bloom and hosting a series of summer events suitable for humans of all ages in their lovely space. Aberglasney Gardens, too, is in the vicinity and holds various music, art, and craft exhibitions. I am looking to the sing-a-long version of Grease that is taking place in Swansea Grand Theatre on Fri 5, in which audience members are invited to karaoke together to a screening of the famous film. If she heard my singing, Olivia Newton John would eat her heart out – I mean, literally! I’ m not great, but again it sounds like really good fun. The 40th anniversary of the Rocky Horror Picture Show celebrates with a thrusting good time for all at Cardiff’ s New Theatre from Mon 8, also. In my own area of literary-ness, there is the Back Of The Pub Poetry Club in Cardiff on Sun 21, which features poet Clare Ferguson- Walker with Will Ford as the MC. This is a free event which really shows why spoken word is the fastest growing entertainment genre in the UK – come take a looksee! One of my fave poets, the amazeballs and veeeeery amusing John Hegley, will be performing at the Caerleon Arts Festival on Sat 13. Sounds good to me, I will see you there.
