live review RIHANNA
Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. Mon 10 June words ANTONIA LEVAY Over-sexed, overpaid and over here. After a ludicrous amount of screaming, drinking and adoration from thousands of fans, the Barbadian diva appeared.“ What the fuck Cardiff!” were the first words uttered... nice. The first half-hour was pretty much an ongoing procession of crotch-grabbing, arse-shaking and grinding to a number of incoherent ragga / dub songs. There appeared to be a few technical issues as her earpiece was seen dangling several times and her vocals didn’ t match up; in fact it could have been anyone singing along randomly, karaoke-style. The theme throughout the whole show was limited to sex, more sex – whether it’ s getting any or getting too much – and more sex. Two hours of listening to lyrics about unrequited, forbidden, dirty love / sex is tedious and boring. The third outfit change comprised a Clockwork Orange-esque black and white get up, bathed in red lighting with her version of My Party:“ Now remember this shit!” Well, quite frankly, I won’ t. Thankfully, an hour in and the boredom lifted slightly, a more upbeat Eurotrash version of We Found Love getting the crowd going. Adorned by scary lady dancers she strutted across the stage and got acquainted with the crowd. Thank the lord she didn’ t drag some poor unsuspecting Welsh boy onto the stage for a grinding session. The only thing missing from the set was a Hammond organ soundtrack and“ whey hey” 70s porn film. There is no doubt she is an incredibly talented mega star, but what should have been a spectacular show was rubbish. At £ 60 plus for tickets, fans deserve more effort and less swearing.
