UNTIL relatively recently, the traditional music of Wales has been largely under represented when compared to the thriving scenes of other Celtic nations including Scotland, Brittany and Ireland. Today, thanks to bands such as Jamie Smith’ s Mabon, Allan Yn Y Fan and Calan, and the hard work of Trac, the Welsh folk music development agency, there’ s a growing awareness of Wales’ rich traditional musical heritage. The renewed interest in the Welsh tradition isn’ t something that’ s happened overnight and to fully appreciate how long it’ s taken to enter the mainstream we have to look back to the 1960s and Dafydd Iwan’ s role in establishing a modern Welsh scene and the 1970s when Ar Log carried the torch. The 1990s saw the emergence of a new generation of musicians with bands such as Moniars, Gwerinos and Bob Delyn A’ r Ebillion taking the tradition to new and often unexpected places. One of the most important bands to emerge from those days were Fernhill, whose constantly evolving line-up centred on the pairing of multi instrumentalist Ceri Rhys Matthews and singer Julie Murphy. Since their formation in 1996, Fernhill have introduced their unique take on Welsh folk music to a global audience winning fans from around the globe. Over the course of one live and five studio albums, Fernhill have redefined the Welsh tradition, often deconstructing the music before reassembling it in surprising ways without ever losing sight of where it originated. The band’ s current line-up of Matthews and Murphy, trumpeter Tomos Williams and fiddler Christine Cooper has been together for a few years now, something that’ s evident in the ease with which they take four exceptional individual talents and transform them into something that is so much more than the sum of its parts. As you’ ll be able to hear on Tue 2 July, when the band perform for the Roots Unearthed series at Cardiff’ s St David’ s Hall. July also sees the arrival in Cardiff The Spooky Men’ s Chorale, a choir of bearded and be-hatted Australians whose repertoire runs from traditional Georgian chant to covers of ABBA songs. From heartbreaking to hilarious, the full range of The Spooky Men’ s vocal excellence can be experienced at St David’ s Hall on Tue 23 July where they’ ll be appearing as part of the Welsh Proms series.
