Info : 0844 8849171 / www . globaloxygen . co . uk It ’ s not blindingly obvious why Slovenian DJ / producer Umek , out of a big whack of jocks trading in functional but alluringly forthright techno 10 to 15 years ago , was the one that seriously crossed over . Most likely , he just wantedt it more than Billy Nasty or Ben Long or someone like that – the upshot being that he wears shades in all his press photos , releases records on the Toolroom label and plays clubs like Oxygen , which normally deals in trance and mersh house all the way . There ’ s very little soft-serve or poseur-friendly about a presentday Umek set , though : slick loops made for big rooms mesh with midrange distortion and trippy samples , with the result likely to bring Swansea ’ s technoheads out in their stomping boots .
