Info: 0844 8849171 / www. globaloxygen. co. uk It’ s not blindingly obvious why Slovenian DJ / producer Umek, out of a big whack of jocks trading in functional but alluringly forthright techno 10 to 15 years ago, was the one that seriously crossed over. Most likely, he just wantedt it more than Billy Nasty or Ben Long or someone like that – the upshot being that he wears shades in all his press photos, releases records on the Toolroom label and plays clubs like Oxygen, which normally deals in trance and mersh house all the way. There’ s very little soft-serve or poseur-friendly about a presentday Umek set, though: slick loops made for big rooms mesh with midrange distortion and trippy samples, with the result likely to bring Swansea’ s technoheads out in their stomping boots.
