CHRIS LIBERATOR
Subversion @ The Underground, Swansea Sat 13 July Having evolved from the underground squat and free party scene, Subversion draws a diverse mix of people from all across Wales who are united by their love for all things techno. For July’ s event they welcome back Chris Liberator of the Stay Up Forever Collective and one of the pioneers of the London acid techno sound.“ It usually goes right off the scale whenever Chris is on the 1210s at Subversion,” explains Robi Lear.“ Subversion is the only event in South Wales that plays a unique style of techno with a rawer, harder edged sound, from acid techno to more European styles. DJs like DAVE The Drummer and of course Chris Liberator are regulars, and we enjoy the odd visit from James Ruskin. All play on a brand new Funktion One sound system which is unique to Swansea.” There is also a shout out to be given to the local talent who are the crux of the night.“ Supporting are the S. U. S. S collective,” says Robi,“ with Fraz who is the founder of Subversion who plays diverse styles of techno with a hint of Detroit. Myself and Ceri( the S. U. S. S twins) are residents and copromoters, both successful producers with tracks signed to major techno labels. Theron B is also a regular with dark and phat techno sets – always pleasing to the ear.” Admission: £ 7. Info: 07446 293656( RH)

INTRODUCINGLIVE
The Globe, Cardiff Sun 14 July If, like me, you are underwhelmed by Daft Punk’ s latest album, this is a chance for you to relive their glory days of 10 or so years ago. Introducing are a band who have tapped into the concept of recreating electronic albums for a live audience. Previous endeavours have included tours recreating DJ Shadow’ s Endtroducing and a selection of Mr Scruff’ s catalogue. This time around it is DP’ s second album Discovery getting the overhaul.“ Endtroducing was incredibly challenging,” explains Introducing’ s Matt Derbyshire.“ Recreating the sounds alone took six months. Then we started rehearsing with a nine-piece band. Getting the sound right was crucial. It ended up having the feeling of an experience to witness rather than as gig. Everyone complimented us on how they had never seen anything quite like it. Actors reciting long monologues rather than singing, and long extended ambient sections follow but cut-up samples quickly played. With Scruff, we were incredibly lucky to have his backing from the start, so we decided to create more of a DJ mix-style set.” Good stead for tackling their latest challenge then, although it is new territory in terms of energy.“ Discovery is one of the greatest, fastest, craziest electronic albums ever,” says Matt.“ Its recreation on stage is a feat of determination, hard graft, and musical heroism.” Tickets: £ 10. STORM / ALLEY CAT
Aperture Presents Feline @ Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff Fri 19 July Female DJs populate the line-up for Aperture’ s second July date at Clwb( the first sees Utah Jazz headlining on Fri 5). The night is much respected and well renowned far and wide for its discerning drum’ n’ bass, and this evening will be no exception, with Storm [ pictured ] and Alley Cat taking the top slots for the all-girl DJ shindig. Feline is a collective of DJs and MCs who are all female and were originally based at Herbal in Shoreditch, where over two floors they were able to highlight drum’ n’ bass along with other styles of music played by Feline residents and special guests, all of which were female. The night made it possible for female DJs from other countries to have the possibility of getting a set whilst in London. DJ Storm is well known as one of the founders of Metalheadz alongside Goldie and Kemistry, her DJ partner and soulmate who was tragically killed in a freak motor accident in 1999. Also on the line-up is Kokeshi label main name Alicia Bauer, better known to those before her on the dancefloor as Alley Cat. Bauer created the Kokeshi imprint in 2009, after which Lung sent her some demos when he saw her DJing in Cardiff. Irrelevant was also picked up on and the label quickly gained momentum, with regular nights at Fabric and Icon. Admission: £ 10 /£ 8. Info: 029 2023 2199( RH)

FREEROTATION
Baskerville Hall, Hay-On-Wye Fri 12-Mon 15 July You might ask why we do this to you – taunt you with a electronic music festival up there with any happening in Britain this year, one operating a members-only scheme which only gives you the chance of going if one of said members invites you. You might ask why the writer does this to himself, given that the lineup is speckled with acts whose very names singe his eyebrows off. Well, it would be criminal to not acknowledge something this spectacular and this close, really. Also, there are bugger all club nights happening in July. The lowdown, then. Freerotation is in Baskerville Hall, a stately home just outside Hay; you can camp or buy a hotel room, while the music takes place over two rooms. For 2013, there is about the same proportion of techno, house and post-dubstep as the last couple of years, but with a lot more acts playing live – probably over half, including most of the biggest names. There are some coups therein: German bizarro-jazz dude Burnt Friedman; IDM prototypes The Black Dog [ pictured ]; Karenn, the panelbeating techno teamup of Blawan and Pariah, and Swedish technoists Skudge. Dons of the decks include Patrice Scott, the last word in Detroit deep house; NYC house purist DJ Qu and, as ever, Hessle Audio’ s Ben UFO, Pangaea and Pearson Sound. Tickets: £ 100( sold out).
