IN his epic poem The Waste Land, T.S. Eliot
memorably describes April as “the cruellest
month”. It could be argued, from a fan of folk
and roots music’s point of view, that December
and January run it a pretty close second, as is
revealed from a cursory glance at the listings
pages for those months.
Traditionally, with a few notable exceptions, there
are few tours taking place in December as venues
give themselves over to the usual carol services,
Christmas shows and pantos. Come January, the
situation hardly improves as audiences plead
poverty and/or a bad case of post-Christmas
blues, preferring to stay at home rather than
venture out into the cold and dark.
Thankfully not everyone has gone into hibernation
and as January progresses there’s a glimmer of
hope as a few brave souls hit the road. Among
those doing so as 2014 gets under way, one name
in particular stands out, that of singer, songwriter
and understated guitar hero Steve Tilston.
A professional musician for over 40 years, Steve
Tilston is widely regarded as one of Britain’s
finest songwriters and guitarists. His critically
acclaimed albums regularly feature in people’s
top 10 lists and recently his profile has been
raised with appearances on BBC 2’s Later and
BBC 4’s Songwriters’ Circle as well as winning
the Best Original Song gong at the 2012 Folk
Awards for the title track of his latest solo release,
The Reckoning.
The Reckoning isn’t Steve’s most recent release.
That honour goes to Happenstance a recording
he’s made with the newly formed Steve Tilston
Trio, where he’s joined by long time friends,
violinist Stuart Gordon and harmonica player Keith
Warmington. It’s a combination that, according to
a Guardian review “brings out the jauntier side
of Tilston’s writing, while giving an opportunity
for him to demonstrate his instrumental skill.”
Originally formed for a one-off gig, the three friends
had such a good time that they decided to continue
their collaboration, recorded the aforementioned
album and began to play more gigs, the culmination
of which is The Happenstance Tour. That tour
rolls into the Roots Unearthed series at Cardiff’s
St David’s Hall on Tue 28 Jan; an unmissable
opportunity to experience one of Britain’s finest
musicians and songwriters.
