This Christmas time the Sherman Cymru will host a magical adventure that is set to kindle warm excitement in
the hearts of children and adults alike. Robert Alan Evans’ The Sleeping Beauties features all the much-loved
elements of the original fairytale with a spicy twist - there is not one but two beauties, spellbound to sleep for a
long, long time. Expect an entrancing mix of music and theatre as we follow these two best friends on a creepy
and captivating journey.
The story begins with the Queen, her servant Rose and her servant’s daughter Eve, but all is not well in the
Kingdom. The Queen has everything apart from the very thing she most desperately longs for: a daughter of her
own. After a risky promise to a witch and a flutter of evil magic, the Queen’s wish is granted and her beautiful
baby Dawn is brought into the world. Yet, the promise is soon broken and Dawn is doomed to a curse. She will die
on her fifteenth birthday by pricking her hand on the needle of a spinning wheel.
The day of evil is looming but best friends, Dawn and Eve, are willing to sacrifice anything for each other. Even
if it means losing their world. Spellbound to sleep for a thousand years, the two beauties have no idea just how
strange their surroundings would become. We follow their journey as they awake to battle the consequences
of time and beauty in a world haunted by loss. Can they hold their bond together in the face of a spooky forest
kingdom, sinister magic and a handsome prince that threatens to split them apart?
Writer, Robert Alan Evans commented, “I did think a lot about home when I wrote it. What is interesting about
The Sleeping Beauties is that they lose their world to time. What would it be like to wake up in a thousand years?
People want to live forever, but the reality would probably be horrible. That was what made the show fun to write,
imagining the future.”
