2014 is bound to be singer/songwriter/harpist Georgia Ruth’s
year, as she enjoys the (well deserved) recognition that was given
to her with the Welsh Music Prize award and her performance at
WOMEX. Her 2013 album Week Of Pines has receive rave
reviews as she breathes new life into traditional Welsh
music. She is currently planning a new tour in spring
but there is still a chance to catch her in small venues in
December.
Other home-grown musical talents to watch this year is
luminous folk-rock pair Zervas and Pepper, whose second
LP Lifebringer released to much praise this year. Playing
at Cardiff Bay’s Glee Club in Feb the duo, who
have had stamps of approval from The Times
and BBC Radio, look like they are set for good
things.
If you’re wanting to listen to something a
little bit different in this new year then make
sure you seen what All That Malarkey are up
to. This quartet of singers, accompanied by
David George Harrington on piano, has made
waves that the Edinburgh fringe this year. Their
classically trained voices put a unique twist on
modern songs and create music that is best
described as charming and surprising.

The wonder year of 2014 has blessed the city of
Cardiff with the title of European Capital For Sport,
and has put our Welsh capital in amongst cities such
as Stockholm, Milan and Istanbul. With such an
important title Cardiff will be being expected to live up
to expectations with the Heineken Cup Final and the
UEFA Super Cup Final both being hosted here.
If you like your sport a little more theatrical, the
world famous Harlem Globetrotters will be hitting
the Motorpoint Arena in April with their unique
combination of theatre, comedy and ball handling.
