CURTIS STIGERS
Corran Hotel, Laugharne, Sat 21 June
words ANTONIA LEVAY
As part of a new live entertainment phase Live@The Corran was launched
on a beautiful sunny evening with American sax legend Curtis Stigers. The
secluded, walled-in venue, overlooked by the restaurant, was set up with a
massive stage, food stalls, bar and seating to accommodate 800-plus music
lovers for their first live event.
The weather couldn’t have been more perfect: as if it had been ordered
especially from the man above himself. Hospitality kicked off at 2pm with a
BBQ and doors opening from 6pm. Three support acts led the evening: Fe
Salomon (Fiona Salomon), Sian Evans (of Kosheen fame, and now back in
Wales launching her solo career) and Londoner Harris Adams. The relaxed,
acoustic feel to the three support acts kept the audience happy. Despite
the airline losing his luggage and all of his band’s clothing (thankfully
local retailer Dyfed Menswear came to the rescue), Curtis took to the stage
around 9.45pm – though not before having a drink at the bar, fairly incognito
until he was spotted and inundated with photo-hungry fans. Nevertheless he
made a sharp exit and appeared no worse for wear when he launched into
his set. Curtis, of course, delighted the crowd with his huge hits of the 90s,
I Wonder Why and You’re All That Matters To Me, and a fabulous version
of Robert Palmer’s I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight plus Sleeping With The Lights
On and a host of jazz favourites. A perfect location for any live music event,
there will be another music happening at the end of August which promises
to be a more soulful affair.
