CULTURE ON THE COAST
Kathryn Tann finds there’s more to the
Heritage Coast than sea and sand.
I
f you fancy foraging like Bear Grylls, taking your
Instagram photography experience to the next
level or simply enjoying a private tour of a Welsh
beauty spot, then it might be worth checking our
Glamorgan Heritage Coast’s latest creation. This
summer they are launching six new pilot activities
as part of an exciting programme created by Creative
Rural Communities.
A range of different organisers will be offering
unique experiences for visitors to the Vale; from
willow-weaving and beach foraging, to photography
carriage rides and stained glass classes.
You can also enjoy the scenic shore of Glamorgan
Heritage Coast from the comfort of a luxury car, as
the people at Oakwood Bespoke Journeys take you
on a tour of the coastline.
As well as these tours there will be photography
classes in the form of a good old fashioned ramble,
charming carriage rides and craft workshops run
by local people – all set in the coasts’ beautiful
environments such as the seaside woodland at
Monks Wood.
Running a number of free willow-weaving workshops
is artisan Claire Revera. “We want to help people use
a completely sustainable material to produce
BUZZ 54
something simple and beautiful,” she explains.
“Most people who take part in these workshops
become really obsessed.”
Continuing with the creativity, there will be stained
glass window classes which begin with a stroll along
the shore whilst sketching out ideas, before returning
to the Heritage Coast Centre at Dunraven for a handson chance to create a lasting reminder of your day.
There’s plenty going on outside the workshops as
well, whilst photography master classes go on the
move (you can learn how to take great snaps during
a 14-mile walk or even on an open-topped carriage
ride). If there’s less art and more Scout in you,
however, you may want to visit the beach and cook
up a seaside feast using only foraged food with the
help of bushcraft experts Wild Spirit Wales.
As this programme is still in the pilot stages, they
are yet to become a permanent feature and all these
tempting events are currently only scheduled to run
until September. If you want to get a little bit more
hands-on while taking in the Glamorgan Heritage
Coast, it would be wise to act quick.
