Originally published in Welsh under the title Y Dwr, Lloyd Jones’ Water
depicts a dystopian future in which civilisation has collapsed and fractured
under the pressures of an unpredictable climate.
Billed as “cli-fi” or climate fiction, the novel explores the affects of global
warming and rising sea levels on an increasingly isolated population.
The family at Dolfrwynog farm are cut off, forced to revert to farming and
scavenging on the land in order to survive. Unaccustomed to life without
modern comforts, the family rely on the knowledge of Uncle Wil, the
archetypal Welsh farmer figure and symbol of a traditional way of life lost
to technology. The arrival of a young Polish man, nico, gives the family
hope of a future and an escape
