ARTY CHOKE!

Digesting the best of South Wales culture in the month ahead

by Gareth Ludkin

IN terms of art and cultural goings on, August is often considered one of the quietest months of the year. We certainly feel it here at Buzz towers where listings are reduced and worthy stage and art events are much harder to come by. Whether this be as a result of summer holidays for those working in the cultural sector, or simply a time for reflection, relaxation and planning, I have never really been sure. Of course, having said this, I can easily disprove my own point by waxing lyrical about what fantastic events are taking place this month; many of them perfectly suited to families. Green Man has loads to get excited about; not least the fantastic lineup, but the intriguing Einstein’ s Garden, Speak Easy and Little Folk areas which offer plenty of inspiration, laughter and good times. In terms of art, if you can make it over to the Last Gallery in Llangadog, Nigel Cox has a fantastic looking exhibition from Sat 3-Sun 18. Focused on the history and inter-relationship of Wales and its landscape, the photographic Hill Ponies exhibition features the semi-wild ponies of South Wales as an allegorical message for the changing shape and history of rural Wales and its communities. Milkwood Gallery are also ploughing ahead with August. Nigel Davies will be operating the fictional‘ Department Of Public Possibility in Roath for the first three weeks of August. Proposing solutions to the community of Roath through public art, it looks to be an intriguing project. Ffwrnes Family Festival( Fri 16-Sun 18) in Llanelli is going to be loads of fun with classes in Indian martial arts, circus skills, African arts, drama, puppetry, storytelling, Brazilian arts, parkour and dance all planned at Y Ffwrnes theatre. I’ ll be getting in the carnival spirit at Gwdihw, Cardiff, on Sat 10 Aug where I will be spinning a few carnival vibes and putting on the excellent Bristol band Papa Le Gal for the official SWICA Cardiff Carnival After Party. Also, If you’ re not taking advantage of the urban beach which has been laid on for all to enjoy in Cardiff Bay, you’ ll certainly have to pop down to the Balloon Art Festival from Sat 17-Sun 18; if only to see if the giant Octopus on page 66 is there. And finally, as it comes to the final sentence of my last issue as editor of Buzz, I’ d like to say thanks to all of the Buzz team( especially Gillian!) who’ ve put up with me since my first issue in 2010. And also, extended thanks to all the tireless organisers of the many brilliant events and activities which I have had the fortune to attend, visit and enjoy over the last few years.
