METABEATS Hully Gully @ Gwdihw, Cardiff, Sat 24. Admission: £ 3. Info: 029 2039 7933 / www. gwdihw. co. uk Metabeats, the name Che Ahmed of Darkhouse Fam uses for his solo hip-hop productions, is responsible for the best album to come out of south Wales so far this year. Caviar Crackle is a work of depth, power and groove which chops up breakbeats and deploys samples with a dexterity comparable to J Dilla or Madlib. Listening to it, you strongly suspect that Ahmed has some belting records in his racks – which makes this rare Metabeats DJ set at Hully Gully, Gwdihw’ s monthly night of funk and general dancefloor bombs, an excellent and overdue booking. Coincidentally( although possibly not), Don Leisure – the other half of Darkhouse Fam – is one of the guest DJs here a week later, at the intermittent Lovetempo night.
