When I were a lad hubs were parts of car wheels, doomed to remain mysterious because of the so-called‘ hubcaps’ which covered them. Now it is the age of adulthood and we all speak 21st century lingo, including‘ hub’ to mean the focal point of creative activity. This is very relevant to the idea behind the Hub Festival, a bank holiday music weekender which condenses dozens of bands into Cardiff’ s narrow but bustling Womanby Street. The people behind Hub are, for most of the year, the people behind the Full Moon venue, which also incorporates the Moon Club and The Loft. As their relentless booking schedule suggests, they are keen reppers of‘ the local scene’, and wanted to give it a showcase big enough that people outside of the immediate area would take notice. To do this, they needed to think of the other venues nearby( Clwb Ifor Bach, Dempseys and Fuel) as allies, not rivals; pleasingly, each have got on board with the idea, and will be hosting bands all weekend. Music venues that aren’ t strictly music venues also feature: Cardiff Fashion Quarter and possibly the City Arms. Bands, promise the Hub team, will be eclectic and conducive to party times, ranging from rock to hip-hop to jazz to metal to house and( of course) much more. Some of the first names announced include Joe Driscoll & Sekou Kouyate, Trippy Wicked And The Cosmic Children Of The Night, Right Hand Left Hand, Prosperina, Them Squirrels and Gwenno. If those aren’ t to your taste, something else is very likely to be. pg 60 pg 61 pg 64 pg 71 pg 76 pic: PAUL THOMAS
