THE TIDY BOYS
Keep It Hard @ Charlie Brown’ s, Cardiff Sun 25 Aug A decent summer comes to a close tonight with Bank Holiday Sunday shenanigans from the nutty Keep It Hard collective, who bring two of the most respected geezers from the genre formerly known as hard house. The Tidy Boys have been going for as long as this writer has been listening to electronic music – recollections of their sets at the Hippo are sketchy at best – but their reputation for fast and furious is not as just as it used to be.“ We prefer the groovier, funkier hard house,” they explain.“ Our sound is a bit slower than it used to be – we are getting old. We also like to keep an element of fun in there. A good set should be a real mixed bag: 80 % entertainment and 20 % education. The new term for our music is now called HDM – hard dance music – the USA loves it.” Still the innovators, Amadeus Mozart and Andy Pickles have moved on from the Tidy Trax label they created in 1995 and have their ear to the ground when it comes to emerging talent.“ We have currently been busy setting up the new label, Ideal,” say the duo,“ and working on Ideal Weekenders. Ideal is only none months old and has already become the biggest selling hard dance label in the UK. We are working on a new album and working with BK on a new track too. We’ re loving the new HDM sound of Technikal – Alf has just got better and better recently. Also new talent like Max Mozart( yes, Amo’ s son) and Ben Carr who is producing some great twisted disco hard house. Other faves are Ross Homson, Lucy Fur and Sub Ctrl.” Tonight will be the latest in a very long line of tear-ups in the Welsh capital for The Tidy Boys, and even if you don’ t usually like hard dance, they aim to please all punters.“ We like Wales,” they summarise.“ The crowds are always up for it and like to have fun. Expect two blokes jumping around on stage, having fun and playing music they have loved for over 17 years.” Admission: £ 8 /£ 5adv. Info: 029 2022 0114 RYAN HEEGER
BEFORE DIANA DIED
The Moon Club, Cardiff Sat 10 Aug Attempting to condense a decade of music into one evening is a precarious and arduous task. Anyone charged with doing so should have more, WAY more, essential bangers than can fit into the timeslot – four and a half hours, in this case of conceptual Cardiff nostalgic DJ pair Before Diana Died( who limit their choices to 1990-97, hence the name). Also, people’ s musical decades might have absolutely nothing in common with one another. So, do Before Diana Died rep for the chart hits, the indie chart slow burner, the then-cool-now-corny stuff or vice versa? Yes they do.“ Retro nights in Cardiff only ever play the tired, populist hits. We wanted to create a club night that is a much more accurate reflection of the decade,” say BDD henchmen Daryl and Kai.“ There was so much great pop music from the decade that is forgotten – Opus III, Touch And Go, Beats International, Shanice, Kym Sims and En Vogue. Playing these next to 60ft Dolls, Pavement, Faith No More and Mighty Mighty Bosstones is so much fun!” This will be the second instalment proper of BDD.“ The first night [ in May ] surpassed our wildest expectations,” say the duo. We’ re doing this because we’ ll just be at home playing this music anyway, and we want to get dirty with all the great music from the 90s.” Admission: £ 3. Info: info @ thefullmooncardiff. com( NG)
COMMIX
Catapult Presents @ Gwdihw, Cardiff Sun 11 Aug The Sunday afternoon / into the night parties in the Gwdihw car park are something unique to behold in Cardiff clubland. Likeminded folk with a penchant for flicking the Vs at Monday morning gather in various states of sobriety, from stone cold through to still-out-from-last-night. Combine that with promotion by Catapult – who celebrate 20 years of pushing dance music this year – and you have a summer outdoor event worth investing in. Catapult have been putting on some stellar events under their Presents arm for some time – some of the names worthy of note so far this year have included Hazard, Uncle Dugs, Kallista and Doc Scott. This month their main guests are George Levings and Guy Brewer, known for this page’ s purposes as Commix, the drum’ n’ bass outfit from Cambridge. Having honed their craft since their inception in 2002 with 12” releases for imprints including Aquasonic, Tangent, Good Looking and Creative Source, Commix put out their debut album Call To Mind on Metalheadz in 2007. They’ ve kept them coming since then, with last year’ s compilation Dusted sandwiching their FabricLive. 44 mix and Metalheadz’ commissioned remix album of the debut, Re: Call To Mind. Putting their success down to constantly evolving, Commix say their second studio album will be less about samples and more about the next level of drum’ n’ bass. Tickets: £ 11. K-KLASS
Time Flies @ Crystal, Cardiff Sun 25 Aug Another Bank Holiday Sunday happening, so if The Tidy Boys rattle your fillings in all the wrong ways you might want to get smoother-but-even-older-schooler with K-Klass. You will of course have heard Rhythm Is A Mystery umpteen times, but that doesn’ t mean it don’ t still float boats on the dancefloor.“ We still do it live and play it when we do classics sets,” say the group.“ The reaction is still as mad as ever! It’ s great to see kids that weren’ t even born in 1991 singing every word to it. Put into perspective, it’ s like me going out when I first started clubbing and dancing to music from the 60s. Long may it continue.” Originally from Wrexham, Andy Williams, Carl Thomas, Russ Morgan and Paul Roberts met at Manchester’ s much-lauded Hacienda nightclub in 1988. Although they have to date only released two albums – 1993’ s Universal and 1998’ s K2 – that is about to change and they are enjoying a resurgence and partnerships with names both classic and contemporary.“ We have loads on the go,” they explain.“ First up is a collaboration with the Futuristic Polarbears called All Night Long. Then next up is a project with house legend Todd Terry with a track some may remember called Just Come. Then there’ s loads of new stuff for our 25 album, due for release in September. Big thing planned with that... watch this space!” Tickets: £ 10. Info: 07973 222231( RH)
RESET LAUNCH PARTY
The Underground, Swansea Fri 9 Aug“ The amount of craziness that we are going to bring,” explains Reset copromoter and resident Ashley‘ Ceefax’ Clarebout,“ from the BPM changes to the hard-hitting drops, this launch is going to be off the chain. Expect hands-up breakdowns, huge sub breaks and filthy wobbles, all delivered on the scariest looking soundsystems in one of the most intimate venues.” Anything new in clubland gets our support, especially when the team behind it step up with such enthusiasm. Resident focused night Reset may be fresh to the Swansea scene, with a clear vision of what will work.“ The idea behind Reset has really come from what is going on in the States,” explains Ash,“ as well as Europe where this EDM sound is really being pioneered. We cover everything including electrohouse, complextro, big / main room, Melbourne, dubstep, trap and moombahton. Now that can get very crazy with a lot of BPM changes, to which a lot of generic house or techno promoters would probably think we are mad, and they are probably right.” Launching a new night is gutsy, but how healthy is the Swansea scene?“ There’ s a lot of great clubs doing well for themselves,” says Ash.“ Delusion, Dirtbox and Subversion are all pioneering individual sound. Our aim is to add Reset to that list.” Admission: £ 5. Info: 07980 448660( RH)
