NYMPHS & DRIES
What flies do I need to get started fly fishing?
I think it’s essential that anyone getting in to this to remember
that fly fishing in theory is very simple.
We need to figure out what the fish are eating, and then present an
imitation of that as naturally as possible to trick the fish into thinking it
is the real thing. Simple!?
What follows is an assortment of the most basic flies that imitate the
insects you are most likely to encounter trout eating. In other words,
here’s your starter pack.

c. Carlson’s Purple Haze
sizes: 12, 14, 16, 18
A relatively new school fly designed by Andy
Carlson. The Purple Haze is a variation of
the very popular Parachute Adams. The fly
replicates many hatches such as mahoganies,
BWO’s, March Browns, and Callebaetis. This
fly can also be used as just a general attractor
fly. The fly uses Wonderwrap on the body and
floats very well.
d. Chubby Chernobyl
sizes: 8, 10, 12, 14, 16
If there’s one fly that has risen to the top of
trout fishing “requirements” in recent years it’s
the Chubby Chernobyl. Despite its looks, this
fly, like its predecessors, the Black Mamba and
the Chernobyl Ant are deadly trout patterns. It
floats high, and it’s extremely easy to see. It is
sold in a variety of colors and sizes. The foam
helps it float and the synthetic wing makes it
as easy to see as any strike indicator.
