• United Kingdom – 24th January 2017 - The UK Supreme Court ruled that Parliament must be consulted before Article 50 of the EU treaty can be invoked . The landmark judgement is a defeat for the UK government , which had tried to argue that it could act without Parliament ' s approval . The ruling means the terms of Brexit must now be debated in Parliament , and the government will need to obtain approval for its Brexit plans by Parliamentary vote .
• Netherlands – 15th March 2017 - Geert Wilders , right-wing “ the Party for Freedom ” will challenge the establishment in the general election .
• Germany – election date to be confirmed 27 August - 22nd October 2017 – Angela Merkel , Chancellor of Germany , has already announced that she is backtracking on her liberal immigration policy and is intending to control media in order to prevent further increased support for Frauke Petry , right-wing , “ Alternative for Germany ”.
• Finland – 9th April 2017 – Timo Soini , the “ True Finns ” party has a third opportunity to challenge the establishment in the general elections .
• France – election start 23rd April 2017 - Marine Le Pen of the right-wing Eurosceptic party “ National Front ” is challenging the establishment but received a backlash as the French court gave her controversial father Jean-Marie Le Pen the right to remain as its honorary president . Marine had wanted to ‘ detoxify ’ her party by removing her father from its operations . Marine ’ s tipped main opponent was right-wing Francois Fillon , who represents the " Republican party ". Francois Fillon ' s campaign was recently troubled by a corruption scandal involving his British wife . He is perceived as the Putin-friendly candidate in the election .
• Sweden – 9th September 2018 - Mattias Karlsson , right-wing “ Swedish Democrats ” is challenging the establishment in the next government election . US president Trump recently put Sweden in focus in one of his speaches which humoured his many opponents . The election in 2018 will show if there is " no smoke without fire ".
• United Kingdom - 23rd June 2016 - the British referendum :
• 51.89 % leave vs . 48.11 % remain .
• The trigger of Article 50 scheduled for the end of March 2017 .
• 21st November 2016 - European leaders have reportedly come to a 27-nation consensus that the UK must be forced into a hard Brexit in order to counter the rise of populist movements which could break up the European Union .
• U . S . A . – 8th November 2016 - the election of Donald Trump as president-elect :
• 22 October 2016 - Trump announces a 100-day plan to dismantle government corruption and a requirement to eliminate two regulations for every new federal regulation .
• The stock market up and bond market down based on promises of eased capital market regulations and cut public spending .
• President Donald Trump ( took office 20 January 2017 ) is perceived as the most Putin friendly of the two candidates in the election but less liberal in outsourcing business to China and Mexico .
• Italy - 4th December 2016 - the Italian referendum about the constitutional amendment . a . PM Matteo Renzi resigned as the Italian referendum results showed a heavy support for the “ no ” vote as 68 % of the Italian population participated in the election . b . The progress of the challenging Eurosceptic Five Star Movement was slowed down by the appointment of the new PM Paolo Gentiloni . Some politicians are calling for a reelection in September 2017 as Gentiloni was not elected .
