Y ou might have heard that Tumbler Ridge is a coal mining town. Yeah, that’s true, but…. You might have heard that Tumbler Ridge is home to some of the most exciting paleontological discoveries in Canada, from dinosaur bones to fossilized footprints. This too, is true. You may even know Tumbler Ridge as home to Kinuseo Falls, one of BC’s most photogenic waterfalls and taller than Niagara. Or perhaps you’ve heard that Tumbler Ridge is where two of BC’s three largest wind farms are located. We don’t deny any of it. Tumbler Ridge is all these things and more, including home to the Tumbler Ridge Global Geopark, one of only two internationally designated geoparks in North America. It is a magical land of waterfalls and dinosaurs, an explorer’s paradise, with hundreds of kilometres of trails and areas that have yet to see a human footprint. The area has a varied geology, topography, scenery and human history, and has been catapulted to fame by the fantastic paleontological discoveries of the past decade. While the ‘park’ part of Geopark might bring to mind provincial and national parks, with their restrictions on certain activities like ATVing and snowmobiling, the Geopark designation creates increased recreation opportunities.
