Resident of the Month
Bert Recknor
Berton Dean Recknor was born
April 29, 1928, in Creston, Iowa, to
Randall and Margaret Recknor. Berton
was one of three boys. His brother, Rob-
ert, currently lives in Alabama; and his
brother Norman lives in Florida.
The family moved to Mtn. Grove,
Mo., in 1933, to Illinois, and then back
to Iowa in 1939. Bert graduated from
Afton High School in 1945.
After graduation, he joined the Unit-
ed States Navy, where he worked at a
missile test training center in California
for four years.
Bert worked with the family business
at the MFA plant for several years. In
1970, he moved to the Kansas City area.
He worked for the Safeway corporation,
working in the warehouse division, until
1988.
Bert met Leota Mae at a church re-
vival and the couple were married in
1980. They continued to live and work
in the Kansas City area until 1988 when
they moved to Ash Grove, Mo. Bert be-
gan work with the Mtn. Vernon Rehab
Facility where he continued until his
retirement in 1999. The couple enjoyed
close to 40 years of marriage before
Leota passed away in January 2016.
Bert is blessed by his large family of
eight children, five step children, 20
grand children, and great grandchildren.
He is a member of the Spring Creek
Presbyterian church. Berton is also a
long time member of the Free
Mason organization since 1970,
belonging to the Ash Grove Ma-
son #100 lodge.
Berton loves movies, and at
one time had an impressive movie
collection with over 500 VHS
tapes and 400 DVDs including
100 John Wayne titles. He also
has a John Wayne stamp collec-
tion. Berton particularly enjoyed
collecting John Wayne items, be-
cause John Wayne was born in
Winterset, Iowa, which is close to
Berton’s hometown.
Berton moved to Butterfield in
2016. He enjoys staying busy
with the daily exercises, paddle
ball, and visiting with his many
friends. Thank you for sharing
your story with us, Berton. We
are blessed you are a part of the
BRCC family!
