Colleen Beck,
Resident of the Month
Mary “Colleen” Beck was born Aug.
23, 1929, to James Dillard and Thelma
Kuykendall in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. Col-
leen was the oldest of three children. She
has a younger sister, Chloetta, who cur-
rently lives in Bakersfield, California,
and her younger brother, James, has
passed away. Colleen’s father worked as
a shoe repairman and the family always
lived in the shoe shop. When Colleen was
ten years old, the family moved from Ok-
lahoma to Richmond, California. Colleen
remembers how fun it was when the fam-
ily went to a show together.
In 1949, Colleen graduated from Taft
High School in Taft, California. After
high school, Colleen moved back to
Richmond. She was living next door to
the local fire station when she met
George Beck who was a firefighter at the
station. On July 13, 1951, Colleen and
George were married and Colleen be-
came a step-mother to George’s son, Ste-
ven. Steven sadly passed away last year.
Colleen and George were blessed with
three additional and wonderful children.
Dennis was born in 1954. He currently
lives in Australia. Dan was born in 1955
and, after retiring, moved to Stockton,
Missouri from California. Colleen and
George welcomed their daughter, Debo-
rah, to the family in 1959 shortly after
they moved to Pinole, California. Debo-
rah currently lives in Modesto, Califor-
nia. Colleen also currently has nine
grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren
and two great-great grandchildren.
While George worked his way up
within the fire department eventually be-
coming the captain of the Kingston Fire
Department in California, Colleen
spent her time raising the kids. When
George retired, he and Colleen
moved to Groveland, California
They had fun raising chickens and
goats. “One of our ornery goats
charged at George and knocked him
to the ground!” said Colleen. She
enjoyed crocheting and working
word puzzles. Colleen and George
enjoyed several years of marriage
before he passed away in 1991.
Colleen eventually moved to
Copperopolis, California, and lived
with her son, Dan, and daughter-in-
law, Nancy for several years. Next,
she moved to a facility in Manteca,
California, to live near her daughter
in Modesto. When Dan retired, he
and Nancy, moved to Stockton. To
be closer to them, Colleen moved to
Butterfield in 2017. She is an avid
bingo player and enjoys music and
parties at the facility. Thank you for
sharing your story with us Colleen!
