Lilah Cone,
Resident of the Month
Lilah Cone was born on Nov. 14, 1922,
to Roy and Rachel Earhart in Kansas City,
Mo. Lilah’s brother, Homer, was 16 years
older than her and her sister, Maurine, was
14 years older. As a child, Lilah grew up in
the Missouri, Nebraska and Indiana. Lilah
has many fond memories of her mother,
especially her homemade bread and walks
in the woods.
After graduating from high school, Lilah
worked as a secretary, while taking night
classes at Kansas City Junior College. Due
to her busy schedule, Lilah didn’t have
time for a social life. One night, she agreed
to go to a dance with a girlfriend. It was at
that dance where she met Ernest Cone. Lilah
and Ernest dated for more than a year before
getting married on Dec. 12, 1942. Just six
weeks after their wedding, Ernest was
called to serve in the U.S. Air Force as a
pilot.
Ernest, who currently resides at the Veteran’s Home in Mt. Vernon, Mo., an Lilah
and Ernest will celebrate 73 years of marriage
this coming December. The couple has
been blessed with three great children,
Nancy Hoke, Sharon Underwood and
Bruce Cone. Lilah and Ernest have six
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Lilah has had numerous jobs, but the
most important one has always been raising
her family. Her role as a wife and mother is
her first priority. After her children were in
school, Lilah worked in various secretarial
positions in Kansas City and Florida.
Ernest worked as an air traffic
controller, realtor, home builder and
land developer. In 1971, after Ernest
and Lilah decided to retire, the couple
moved from the Kansas City area to
Pomme De Terre Lake.
Both Lilah and Ernest became
deacons and were involved with Bible
school at their church in Hermitage,
Mo. Lilah stayed active as a member
of a local square dance club, science
club, card club, and bowling club.
Lilah enjoys playing cards, games,
working crossword puzzles and
reading. She is a current member of
Berean Baptist Church in Bolivar.
