Ruth Neal,
Resident of the Month
Ruth Neal was born in Buffalo, Mis-
souri, on Sept. 18, 1932, to Lester and
Ula Mincks. Ruth was the ninth of four-
teen children. Her siblings included Ber-
tha, Leonard, Chestine, Willard, Paul,
Cheslie, Leslie, Rose, Ruth, Boyd
(Butch), Lloyd, Jay, Kenny and Bill.
Cheslie and Leslie were twins, as well as
Butch and Lloyd. Paul, Butch, Lloyd,
Jay, Kenny and Bill all continue to live in
the area, but all the other siblings have
passed away. The family eventually
moved to the Bolivar area and resided
north of town off D highway. Ruth re-
members walking to the store in Huron,
Missouri, to get groceries and having to
carry them all back home. Ruth jokes
that she and her sisters got “tough” by
having so many brothers who liked give
them a hard time and punch them in the
arm! The kids attended Mt. Etna School
and walked there each day.
On Oct. 13, 1951, Ruth married Dale
Neal. Dale was a friend of Ruth’s broth-
ers. The couple celebrated 60 years of
marriage before Dale passed away. Ruth
and Dale were blessed with six wonderful
children. Their four boys include Danny,
Roger, Terry, Artie and their twin girls,
Janise and Danise. Ruth was very busy
caring for all her children and always had
a delicious supper on the table at 5
o’clock each evening. Ruth has also been
blessed with several grandchildren and
currently has 16 grandchildren and 16
great-grandchildren.
Ruth enjoyed quilting for many years
and looked forward to her monthly
“club” meeting at Mt. Etna Baptist
Church, where she is still a member, and
would quilt with friends. She is
known for her Yahtzee skills and
continues to play with her family
today. She has also played many
games of Old Maid with the grand-
kids throughout the years and has a
special technique to let them win!
Ruth has always enjoyed going to
her kids and grandkids sporting ac-
tivities and events and has spent
much of her time at ball games
cheering for them.
In 2018, Ruth moved to Butter-
field where she has been an avid bin-
go player. She is a blessing to all
those around her with her sweet spir-
it and fun personality. Thank you for
sharing your story with us, Ruth! We
are blessed to have you as part of our
Butterfield family! (pictured below:
