Selma Nelson Resident of the Month Selma Christina Nelson was born in Strong City, Kan., to Henry and Mar- tha Brecht. Selma was from a large family, having four brothers and four sisters. She grew up on the family farm with many fond memories of going barefoot and playing in the creek. Selma graduated from Strong City High School, and soon after married the love of her life, Charles Nelson, in 1947. Charles served in the Navy for eight years after the couple married. He served until an injury forced him into early retirement from the service. Charles worked as a mechanic for many years after returning home. Sel- ma was a homemaker to their six chil- dren: Darlene, Joyce, Carol, Mildred, Terry and Grant. Selma and Charles celebrated 42 wonderful years of marriage. The cou- ple enjoyed many family memories, time spent with their children, and the blessing of their 15 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great- grandchildren. Selma later become certified and began working as a nurses aide at Citizens Memorial Healthcare Facility. She worked their for 12 years before retiring. Selma enjoys crocheting and loves to create unique doilies, wreaths, afghans, tablecloths, bedspreads, and other beautiful crocheted items. She recently placed 1st at the 2017 Golden Age Games in the crochet craft division. She is a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Bolivar. Selma moved to Butterfield in June 2016. She enjoys the crochet club, bingo, and visiting with her many friends. Thank you for sharing your story with us, Selma. We are blessed you are a part of the BRCC family.
