Alice Stottlemyre,
Resident of the Month
Evelyn Alice Stottlemyre was born July 5,
1925, in Callao, Mo., to Emmett and Cecile Den-
nis. Alice was one of four daughters. Her siblings
are Marjorie, Frances, and Ruth. Alice attended
the Callao High School and graduated in 1944.
After graduating, she worked as a riveter at the
North American War Plant.
Alice met Grover Clay Stottlemyre, and the
couple were married December 22, 1944. Grover
was the owner and operator of several business-
es . The couple made their home in Kansas City,
Mo., and were blessed with three children.
One of the most trying times in Alice’s life
was in November of 1957. The driver of
Grover’s truck miscalculated a deep turn which
caused the tractor to throw the trailer into the
White River in Ark. Grover was in the sleeper of
the trailer and it threw him out into the river. He
was able to get out of the freezing river to the
bank where bystanders helped him out. He had
multiple breaks in both of his legs. Grover was
hospitalized on and off for four months, with
over one month in Jonesboro, Ark. while Alice
was at home in Kansas City, Mo., with their three
children. This injury caused him to have a pain-
ful walk the rest of his life. At this time, it was
necessary for Alice to return to work at the Ben
Franklin Warehouse in Kansas City.
Alice remained working until the family
moved to Bolivar, Mo. in the early 1960s. Grover
and Alice then built and operated a truck stop
restaurant, motel and station until 1977. The
couple would then start a siding business which
they operated for the next 12 years.
Alice and Grover were blessed with 49 years
of marriage when he passed away from cancer in
1993. After his passing, Alice started a housing
development business which she operated until
her retirement.
Alice enjoyed the blessing of her children
and being involved in their activities including
cub scouts, room mother, and being the PTA
secretary. She loved to travel with Grover and
they enjoyed visiting various parts of the world
and all of the United States together.
Alice’s hobbies have included dancing,
walking, bowling, visiting and giving candy
treats to local care center residents every
Friday for 15 years. She is a member of the
United Methodist Church and was involved
in the Sunday passing of the plate for six
months per year.
Alice is blessed with her wonderful chil-
dren; one son, Phillip Duane, and two
daughters, Patricia Denise McCracken, and
Pamela Diane Bair. Pamela passed away
from cancer in 2017. Alice has seven
grandchildren and seven great grandchil-
dren. Her oldest grandson, Bret, passed
away the same year as Pam.
Alice moved to Butterfield in July 2016.
She enjoys visiting with her friends and
family, reading, and is currently writing her
life memoir.
