Congratulations to Marge Welch on being selected as resident of the month !
Marge was born on Sept . 14 , 1926 , in Savanna , Ill ., to Howard and Myrtle Grayless . Marge had two older brothers , Fay “ Jack ” and Richard , and one younger sister , LaVonne . Because Howard was a concert violinist and Myrtle played the piano , the family ’ s home was filled with music . Howard played at the local opera house and gave violin lessons . He taught Wayne King ( a famous musician of the 30s and 40s ) how to play the violin !
In 1944 , Marge graduated from Savanna High School and joined the United States Cadet Nurse Corps . The Corps paid for schooling and uniforms and gave a $ 15 per month salary . When the war ended Marge postponed the additional required nursing training and in 1946 married Merle Welch . Merle was in the building business and , shortly after they were married , the couple moved into a brand new home . They continued to live in Savanna where they were blessed with three children , Connie , Richard and Thomas .
Connie , and husband , Bruce , live in Liberty , Mo .; Richard and wife , Kelly , live in upstate New York ; Thomas and wife , Melissa , live in Beaufort , S . C . Marge also has five granddaughters and five greatgrandchildren .
In 1960 , Marge and Merle moved their family to Independence , Mo . Merle worked as a commercial builder for the greater Kansas City area . In 1969 , when their oldest child went to college , Marge began working outside of the home . She worked as a tester for Western Electric in Lee ’ s Summit , Mo ., until she retired in 1987 .
Upon retirement Marge and Merle purchased an airstream travel-trailer and spent winters in Del Rio , Texas , near the Mexican
border . In 1990 , they bought land on Table Rock Lake in Shell Knob , Mo ., and designed and built a log home . Several of their friends had built homes in the same location . The wildlife was plentiful in the area and one day even a bear was seen in the neighborhood !
When Merle passed away in 1999 , Marge began volunteering at both the Thrifty Closet and the area Senior Center . She joined the S . O . L . O . ( Society of Lively Oldsters ) Club and enjoyed going to Branson shows , out to eat and other social functions with the club .
In 2015 , Marge moved to Butterfield where she has enjoyed outings , bingo , crafts , parties and other various activities . Her positive attitude and great sense of humor are a blessing to all around her . Thank you for sharing your story with us Marge ! We are blessed to have you as part of our Butterfield family .
