Helen Roberts,
Resident of the Month
Congratulations to Helen Roberts for being
selected as the Resident of the Month for March.
Helen Jenkins Roberts was born to Pat and
Berniece (Armstrong) Jenkins on Aug. 29, 1930
in Bolivar. She has one younger sister, Mary
Scroggins. Helen’s parent’s were charter members
of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Helen
started her schooling at the McKinney Country
School, five miles east of Bolivar, and then attended Bolivar Schools until graduation. After
graduation, Helen went to work at the Polk
County Bank. Helen continued her education at
SBU and MSU, eventually earning her master’s
degree in education. She was a school teacher
for many years until she retired in 1992.
During an ice storm in February 1949, Helen,
who was visiting the court house to record bank
documents, crossed paths with Paul Roberts,
who was at his father’s office using his electric
razor. The couple were married on Sept. 9, 1950.
Helen and Paul will celebrate their 65th wedding
anniversary this year. Helen and Paul were have
three children: Paula, Krista and Alan. The couple
have been blessed with 10 grandchildren and
one great grand-child.
Music has always been a big part of Helen’s
family. Paul still loves to sing and for many years
led the singing at Calvary. His renditions of the
classic O’ Holy Night is remembered by many.
Alan has been a member of Floodwater group
since high school, Krista has a minor in music
from SBU and Paula is an artist.
Helen has always been thankful for the time
that she and Paul have spent traveling. They
visited all fifty states, all of Canada and parts of
Mexico. A highlight was spending two months in
Alaska and taking a tour to the Arctic Circle.
While traveling on the ice roads they saw all the
wild animal that lived in the tundra.
As a member of the Historical Society and the
Genealogical Society, Helen has spent a lot of
time doing extensive research on all sides of her
family. She will often tell her children that “your
roots reach all the way to China, right here
in Polk County.”
Just over four years ago, Paul suffered
a stroke which left him unable to walk. To
receive the proper care and rehabilitation,
Paul moved to the Veteran’s Home in Mt.
Vernon, Mo. To be closer to her husband,
Helen relocated to Mt. Vernon where she
lived for three years, until her own health
problems surfaced. At that time, she and
decided she should move to Butterfield.
Now, while living at Butterfield, Helen will
travel to Mt. Vernon several times a week
to Paul.
Helen is very happy at Butterfield and
loves all the residents. She loves to spend
time sewing, crocheting, knitting, tatting
and doing other “fancy work.” She remembers saying when BRCC was being built, “
I’m going to live there someday.” Many
years later, that prediction came true.“All
of the staff and my tablemates have been
so kind,” Helen says with a smile. “They
have made it a fun place to live and I
thank you so very much.”
Thank you Helen, for sharing your
story with us and being such a blessing to
our family here at Butterfield Residential
Care Center!
