Shirley Jenkins,
Resident of the Month
Congratulations to Shirley Jenkins on
being selected Resident of the Month!
Shirley was born on April 21, 1936, to
Orville and Marie Keller on a small farm
northwest of Humansville, Mo. Her parents
were farmers and her dad also served as a
Missionary Baptist preacher. Shirley was
the youngest of six children. There were
three boys and three girls in the family and
they all had fun together living on a farm.
Shirley’s only living sibling, Leo, resides in
Collins, Mo., with his wife, Reva.
Shirley graduated from Humansville
High School in 1954. After graduation she
moved to South Dakota where both her
sister and brother lived. While living in
South Dakota she worked as a telephone
operator. She eventually moved back to
Missouri and began working at Wetzel Os-
teopathic Hospital in Clinton. She had sev-
eral duties at the hospital, including work-
ing with insurance. While she was working
and living in Clinton she met her life-long
best friend, Chris. Chris currently lives in
Independence, Mo. It was with Chris’ en-
couragement that Shirley moved to Kansas
City. Initially she worked at a hospital in
Kansas City and then worked for various
doctor’s offices.
On Dec. 17, 1965, Shirley married
Wayne Jenkins. Wayne and Shirley attend-
ed high school together and were in the
same graduating class. Wayne had two
children, Janet and Gary, whom Shirley
helped raise. Janet currently lives in Elkton,
Mo., and Gary lives in Laurie, Mo. They
each have three children. Every summer the
family enjoyed going on a vacation and
camping together.
Wayne and Shirley lived in Independ-
ence, Mo., for many years. Wayne first
worked at a battery company and after it
closed he worked for the Kanas City
Chiefs as the maintenance supervisor.
During the last three years of her ca-
reer, Shirley also worked for the
Chiefs assisting Wayne. For several
years the couple enjoyed visiting their
house at Pome De Terre on the week-
ends. After retiring the couple moved
to Stockton, Mo. They continued to
enjoy camping and traveling and were
blessed to visit all 48 contiguous states
as well as Canada and Mexico.
In 2012, after 46 years of marriage,
Wayne passed away. Shirley contin-
ued to live in Stockton until she
moved to Butterfield in 2015. Shirley
has several nieces and nephews in-
cluding great-great nephews and niec-
es. She continues to be a member of
Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist
Church, enjoys reading and loves
playing Bingo at Butterfield.
Thanks so much for sharing your
story with us Shirley! We are fortunate
to have you as part of our family.
