Growing up, Jo Anna had one brother, French Barnett. She started school in a small country school near Keytesville. During the first grade, she attended four different schools, including one in California, because the family had to move where her dad could find work. In 1950, Jo Anna graduated as the salutatorian from Mendon High. Shortly after her graduation, Jo Anna married James Junior Collins. In their 33 years of marriage, they were joined by three children: J.R. Collins (Bolivar), Sharon Kay Collins-Wisener (Moberly, Mo.) and Donna Jo Collins Salmon. Sadly, Donna Jo passed away in 2007. Jo Anna has been blessed with six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. In 1992, she married Rex Gray and enjoyed 21 years of marriage with him. Jo Anna has had several careers experiences over her lifetime. She was a grocery clerk, worked at a publishing company and then United States Postal Service. In 1971, she was promoted to the Postmaster, where she worked until 1992. During her career as Postmaster, Jo Anna been able to attend 27 National Postmaster conventions in various states, including Hawaii and Puerto Rico. She is also a member of the state and national Postmaster’s Association. Jo Anna enjoys giving back to the community. She has been an active member of the Mendon Christian Church. She has been a member the church’s board and taught Sunday school. She has served as a 4-H leader and organizer. She is a proud member of the Red Hat Society and Square Dance Club. Jo Anna loves to travel. She has visited 44 different states, some of them more than once. She has also had the opportunity to travel the world. She has visited Mexico, Belize, Canada, Philippines, England and Scotland. Other than traveling, Jo Anna enjoys sewing, cooking, and baking cookies for her grandkids. In 2014, Jo Anna moved to Butterfield. She attends most facility activities including daily chair exercises, outings, crafts and bingo. Jo Anna enjoys visiting with others and brings much joy to fellow residents. Jo Anna, we are blessed you are a part of our Butterfield family!
