From , All of us at Butterfield Lois Porter, Resident of the Month Lois Porter was born March 12, 1931, in Platte City, Missouri, to Velma Mae Kincaid and James Campbell Todd. Lois had three brothers, J.C., John Dudley and Edward Lee Todd. Her father worked for various companies and farmed. Lois re- members helping him in the tobacco field when she was just six years old. She would weed around the tobacco plants and worked so hard she would sneak a nap on the feed sacks laid in the field. Lois attended Platte City High School where she met her future husband, Lloyd Porter. Lloyd and Lois met on the first day of high school. The couple were mar- ried on Lois’ 18 th birthday, March 12, 1949. Shortly after getting married, the couple moved to Kansas City, Kansas, where Lloyd worked at the bomber plant. He eventually got a job at Yellow Freight and worked there for 34 years. They lived in Kansas City, Kansas, for more than 60 years and celebrated 60 years of marriage before Lloyd passed away in 2009. In 1950, Lois and Lloyd became the proud parents of Ricky Lee Porter and, eleven years later, welcomed their daugh- ter, Sandra Dee Porter. Ricky currently lives in Johnson County, Kansas. Sandra lived in Bolivar until she passed away last fall. Lois also has four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Lois spent many years of her life grooming, showing and breeding dogs. She began the Porter’s Grooming Shop in her home. The business eventually ex- panded and moved into a store-front. It remained in business for 28 years. Lois specialized in small breeds like Yorkshire Terriers and Toy Poodles. She imported Yorkies from Dublin, Ireland, and Poodles from Sassafras, California. Puppies were sold to many people including famous ball players. Christmas was an especially busy time for the business. Lois found herself selling puppies to truck driv- ers at three o’clock in the morning so they could bring them home as a Christmas gift! Lois loved showing her dogs and traveled to dog shows in every conti- nental state in the U.S. She also trav- eled with dogs to Hawaii and Cana- da. She even showed dogs in Las Vegas, Nevada! Lois would travel with a motor home which had plenty of room for the dogs. In 2017, Lois moved to Butter- field and has enjoyed playing bingo, attending parties and listening to mu- sic. We are grateful and blessed she is a part of our Butterfield family! Thank you for sharing your story with us Lois. Are you a caring individual who would like to assist in caring for the elderly?
