Norma Owens,
Resident of the Month
Congratulations to Norma Owens on
being selected resident of the month!
Norma was born on June 13,1935, in
Exeter, Calif. Norma’s parents, Nathan
Lemuel and Opal Shamblin Wilson, had
four children. Norma had one brother,
Oleah Wilson, and two sisters, Barbara
Sweeney and Linda Barrett.
Norma graduated from Exeter High
School in 1953. She worked alongside her
parents in a citrus fruit packing company
starting at the age of 16. After graduation,
she met Buddy Owens who had just re-
turned home from serving as a marine in
the Korean War.
Norma and Bud were married in 1954
and moved to Sacramento, Calif., where
Bud worked as an auto mechanic and Nor-
ma worked at the Campbell Soup Co. After
three years, the couple returned to Exeter
where Bud continued to work as a mechan-
ic and Norma stayed home and raised their
two girls, Cherryl and Sandra. The family
lived only 15 miles from the Sequoia Na-
tional Redwood Park and spent much time
there hiking and exploring. After the chil-
dren were in school, Norma worked as a
seamstress for a company that made cur-
tains for trailers and motor homes.
In the 1971, the family left California
and moved to Brookline, Mo. They lived
there a year before moving to Wishart, Mo.
Bud worked for the Willard J. Graff voca-
tional school teaching auto mechanics. The
school would later become Ozark Tech-
nical Community College. Norma enjoyed
caring for their home and their grandchil-
dren. In the early 1990s they moved to
Morrisville, Mo.
When Bud retired they enjoyed
traveling and spending time together.
Their adventures included traveling to
all 50 states, a 12 day cruise to Ha-
waii, and several trips to Florida and
Gulf Shores area to deep sea fish.
Norma and Buddy were blessed
with 58 years of marriage before he
passed away in 2012. Norma contin-
ued to live in Morrisville until moving
to BRCC in 2015. She enjoys spend-
ing time with her family. Her daugh-
ters, Cherrly Pyle and Sandra Cross,
along with their husbands, live in
Morrisville and visit often. She is
blessed with seven grandchildren, 10
great-grandchildren, and three great-
great-grandchildren. She enjoys read-
ing, walking, crocheting with the cro-
chet club and playing bingo at Butter-
field.
Thanks so much for sharing your
story with us Norma! We are blessed
to have you as part of our family.
