Kay Lehn,
Resident of the Month
Kathleen “Kay” and her twin sister
Josephine “Jo” were born on June 13,
1925, to Dennis and Jessie Sullivan in
Kansas City, Kan. Growing up, Kay’s
parents owned and operated a dry
cleaners. Her mother was the tailor and
made all types of clothing.
Kay and Jo did everything together.
For Kay, it was fun being a twin. Both
girls worked at the Myron Green
Cafeteria. It was a joke among the staff
that the food and the employee discount
were the only reasons they worked there.
In 1943, Kay met Ed Lehn. At the
time, Ed’s best friend and fellow US
Navy mate, Jim, was Jo’s husband. Kay
and Ed were married in June 1945. After
they married, Ed and Kay moved to
Michigan. It wasn’t long before Ed was
offered a position with the Board of
Public Utilities in Kansas City. The
couple returned and bought a home.
Upon their return, Jo and Jim decided
to purchase a home in the same area. The
houses were identical. The sisters and
best friends were once again together and
shared backyards.
In 1964, Kay and Jo became members of the Wyandotte Eagles Auxiliary.
While on the auxiliary drill team, Kay
and Jo competed against other Eagle
Auxiliaries throughout Kansas.
Ed and Kay remained in this home for
nearly 25 years, before moving to
Edwardsville, Kan., in order to be close
to Jo and Jim. The couple were blessed
with 55 years of marriage. Sadly, in
2000, Jim passed away.
As young women, Kay and Jo were
diagnosed with the same medical
condition, which lead them both to
need numerous blood transfusions.
They also both had long battles with
cancer. Jo passed away in 2006,
nearly 18 years longer than what
was expected. During this time, Kay
was diagnosed, treated and has beat
lymphoma. She is a survivor!
In 2015, with the help of her
nieces, Kay became a member of the
Butterfield Residential Care Center
family. Today, Kay can often be
found enjoying the exercise classes,
social gatherings, parties and Bingo
games that Butterfield has to offer.
Her kind and fun-filled spirit blesses
all of those around her. Thank you
for sharing your story with us. We
are blessed to have you as part of the
Butterfield family.
